چکیده

We report the effects of blending a non-conjugated polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), with the precursor polymer of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). After thermal conversion, the PVA/PPV blends show markedly different absorption and luminescence spectra than neat PPV, even in blends containing only 1 wt.% PVA. These changes coincide with the disappearance of the nanocrystalline domains present in neat PPV. The temperature dependence of the fluorescence decay is not as sensitive to PVA concentration, but also disappears for blends containing more than 60% PVA. The extreme sensitivity of PPV’s optical spectroscopy to small amounts of amorphous blends suggests that the ordered domains play an important role in determining its spectroscopic properties. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Polarized optical spectroscopy applied to investigate two poly(phenylene-vinylene) polymers with different side chain structures.

Two related poly(phenylene-vinylene) (PPV) light-emitting polymers have been investigated by means of polarized optical spectroscopy. The purpose of the investigation was to investigate the nature of the interactions in thin films and to examine what impact the difference in side chain structure and molecular weight in poly(2'-methoxy-5-2-ethyl-hexoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene (MEH-PPV) and poly(...

How chromophore shape determines the spectroscopy of phenylene-vinylenes: origin of spectral broadening in the absence of aggregation.

Single oligo(phenylene-vinylene) molecules constitute model systems of chromophores in disordered conjugated polymers and can elucidate how the actual conformation of an individual chromophore, rather than that of an overall polymer chain, controls its photophysics. Single oligomers and polymer chains display the same range of spectral properties. Even heptamers support pi-electron conjugation ...
